Remixing our co-founders Latin American and southern European backgrounds into our practice, Studio Atomic creates customized environments, cultivating relationships and dialogue with clients whose stories direct the design process, inspiring personalized new possibilities for form, material and space. Our studio is comprised of a versatile team of designers, each with diverse backgrounds in art, interior design, and lighting design.
Studio Atomic is a certified Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) and is a member of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey SBA/MWBE programs.
The Studio Atomic story begins with the chance encounter of its co-founders Paola and Gabriele at Milan's iconic Bar Atomic, one of Gabriele’s favorite local spots where Paola worked while pursuing her Master’s in Italy. Living in Milan after receiving his Master’s, Gabriele worked with contemporary artist Alberto Garutti and was deeply influenced by his work. When Paola and Gabriele founded their firm, naming it “Studio Atomic” was the natural choice, calling to mind the image of the location of their first encounter and echoing Garutti’s work Storie d'amore, a photo series depicting places where couples first met - images of everyday spaces forever imprinted with the memory of a fortuitous first encounter.
The studio’s work is constantly evolving with each collaboration and the infusion of new perspectives, personal stories, and the energy that each project generates. Immersed in a world of color, fashion, contemporary art, and design, Paola and Gabriele are driven to challenge the boundaries of their practice and explore new possibilities in space and light. Energized by the power of context in art and the fluidity of aesthetics, Studio Atomic is drawn to ambiguity in beauty, viewing their diverse creative influences as an abacus, a visualization of eclectic elements to be recombined into an ongoing collage of stylistic collisions.
