Aperitivo #1: Light, Place, and Architecture
On Wednesday, October 16, 2024 Studio Atomic hosted the first edition of our Aperitivo series in our Dumbo studio—an evening of drinks and conversation centered around architecture and lighting design.
The conversation explored the idea that light is fluid—constantly shifting not only throughout the year, but also depending on where we stand on the planet. As the seasons change, so too does our experience of natural light, and with it, our perception of space and form.
This inaugural event brought together architects and lighting designers to reflect on how natural light shapes the built environment. Speakers included Ricardo Palma Prieto, Senior Designer at Bjarke Ingels Group; Andy Rah, Associate Principal at SOM; and Studio Atomic co-founder Paola Pietrantoni. Drawing from their work across the U.S. and internationally, they discussed how different geographies and climates inform their design decisions and their evolving relationship with light.
Ketra lighting was our technical sponsor for the evening. In collaboration with them, we pre-programmed eight distinct lighting scenes, each one designed to match the color temperature of a sky image selected by the speakers—capturing their personal memories and favorite moments of natural light. These dynamic scenes created an immersive atmosphere, allowing guests to experience how shifts in light color and intensity affect spatial perception and emotional response.
